Meet Elizabeth, a 14 year-old, female-spayed Jack Russel Terrier. Elizabeth presented to Ranson Animal Hospital for a routine check-up and oral examination. Her owner(s) had mentioned to our staff that Elizabeth was having some difficulties chewing her food and had really bad breath. Upon examination the reason became apparent. Elizabeth had multiple teeth that needed to be extracted and advanced periodontal disease. After a complete physical exam and screening labwork it was decided to have Elizabeth undergo a complete dental cleaning under anesthesia. Elizabeth had a pre-operative IV catheter placed and she was pre-medicated in order to start her anesthesia. After induction of anesthesia, Elizabeth was intubated and maintained on anesthetic gas and oxygen. A numbing agent was used to block pain sensation to her mouth and teeth as we started her procedure. Multiple teeth were extracted including her upper left canine tooth. In order to prevent food and water from escaping from her mouth through her extraction site and into her nose a gingival graft was placed over the canine extraction site. The remainder of her teeth were scaled and polished and Elizabeth was allowed to recover from anesthesia under observation. In all, Elizabeth's procedure took about an hour and a half from start to finish. She recovered uneventfully from anesthesia during the course of the afternoon and was discharged that evening to her owners.

Photo shows the upper left canine extraction site. The tooth root had abscessed and created a fistula (draining tract) between her mouth and her nose. The adult canine tooth root is very long - it typically runs all the way to the eye socket!
